Most advice about happiness comes with a list of requirements attached — achieve this, acquire that, arrange your circumstances just so. Emily Dickinson's line has no requirements at all. It's a radically minimal bar for contentment, and that's exactly its value. On days when nothing special is happening, when circumstances are plain or even difficult, this line offers a floor that's always available: you are, at minimum, sensing that you're alive. Dickinson, writing from a small room in a small town, found that sufficient. It's worth testing, on your own ordinary day, whether it might be for you too.
