People have spent millennia arguing over the purpose of life — through religion, philosophy, science, art — and produced whole libraries of competing answers. The Dalai Lama's response, from his book The Art of Happiness, is almost startling in its plainness: the purpose is simply to be happy.

It's a conclusion reached the hard way.

Read alongside his other teaching that happiness "comes from your own actions," the two ideas fit together into something practical rather than merely comforting: happiness isn't just life's purpose in some abstract sense — it's a purpose you actively work toward, through what you do, day by day. Simple to state. Not always simple to live. But as an answer to one of the oldest questions there is, it's hard to find one more direct.
