There is no path to happiness; happiness is the path.
Attributed to the Buddha

Like many tidy one-liners credited to the Buddha, whether he spoke these exact words is doubtful — his teachings passed through centuries of oral tradition before being written, and modern, poster-ready phrasings tend to get attached to his name. (The same line is sometimes credited to the Vietnamese Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, who taught very much in this spirit.) So take it as a faithful distillation rather than a verbatim quotation — and a genuinely good one.

The idea it captures cuts against a habit almost all of us share: treating happiness as a destination. We tell ourselves we'll be happy when — when the promotion lands, when the move is done, when things finally settle. Happiness becomes a place at the end of a road, and the road itself becomes something to endure on the way there. The trouble is that the "when" keeps moving. Arrive, and a new destination appears just ahead. The road never actually ends.

This line dissolves the whole trap with a single reframe. If happiness isn't at the end of the path — if it is the path — then there's nowhere to get to and nothing to wait for. The invitation is to find contentment in the walking itself: in the ordinary, unglamorous present moment you're actually living right now, rather than in a future that will, when it comes, simply have become the present too.

It's deeply tied to the Buddhist emphasis on presence — on being here, in this breath, this step, instead of leaning perpetually into what's next. And you can test it against your own life easily enough. Think of how much of your happiness you've quietly postponed to some arriving-someday. This line gently asks: what if it was never up ahead? What if it was available on the path, the whole time?

A step on the path

We make tiny instruments and games for the present moment — a small, calm pleasure, right now. Come have a listen.
